The Google Story

The concept of deciphering the vast amount of data amassing on the Internet interested Brin and Page, who first met while university graduates at Stanford University. They started developing BackRub, an innovative genre of search technology. By monitoring each Web site's "backing links," or the number of other pages associated with them, it was possible to take advantage of users' inherent ranking abilities. A collection of Web sites sorted by how frequently a search phrase occurred on them was the typical result from most search engines. The volume of links each site has was taken into account by Brin and Page when creating the search feature.
They started obtaining outside funding in the middle of 1998. (one of their first investors was Andy Bechtolsheim, a cofounder of Sun Microsystems, Inc.). In the end, they were able to get around $1 million from financiers, family, and friends, and they opened their doors under the name Google in Menlo Park, California.
