The Roche Malaysia story

Founded in 1896 by Fritz Hoffmann-La Roche, the company was early on known for producing various vitamin preparations and derivatives. In 1934, it became the first company to mass-produce synthetic vitamin C, under the brand name Redoxon. During the Second World War Roche collaborated with the Nazi regime in Germany and used slave labour in its German and Polish based factories. In 1957, it introduced the class of tranquilizers known as benzodiazepines (with Valium and Rohypnol being the best known members) It manufactures and sells several cancer drugs and is a leader in this field. In 1956, the first antidepressant, iproniazid, was accidentally created during an experiment while synthesizing isoniazid.

Recruitment process

Roche has a webpage that offers 10 basic tips for the interview. None of them are exactly “inside baseball,” but they’re worth considering.

  • Look Sharp – appearance matters
  • Be on Time – even a little early is a good idea
  • Do Your Research – research the company to understand how you might fit in.
  • Be Prepared – at the very least, bring along a copy of your resume, references and letters of recommendation.
  • Show Enthusiasm – make eye contact, include a firm handshake, show an interest in the job and the company.
  • Listen – be a good listener.
  • Answer the Question Asked – don’t dodge and don’t be vague.
  • Give Specific Examples – or as the company notes, “One specific example of your background is worth 50 vague stories. Prepare your stories before the interview. Give examples that highlight your successes and uniqueness.”
  • Ask Questions – here’s where your research into the company will come in handy.
  • Follow Up – after the interview, send a thank-you note via email or regular mail.

Controversies

Roche has decided to close out a patent infringement lawsuit against AstraZeneca centering on the latter company's newly acquired rare disease drug Ultomiris. Roche’s Chugai Pharmaceutical and AZ’s Alexion Pharmaceuticals inked a deal to end a lawsuit claiming Alexion unlawfully used Chugai's patented drug-delivery technology to reduce the dosing frequency for blockbuster Ultomiris, a filing in Delaware federal court shows. The terms of the settlement remain unknown, and Chugai declined a Fierce Pharma request for comment. The two companies proposed to close the case Monday ahead of a long-delayed trial.
