An electric motor is an integral part of Dyson's machine performance for bringing together the program and engineering teams to deliver the product vision through balancing the machine specification, delivering and managing the motor to meet machine specification

About the role

Dyson is looking for a Motors Engineering Intern who will be responsible for the management and delivery of motor technical study of the Dyson Floorcare cleaner head tool motor with guidance and supervision from the Motor Engineer in MDC. This will require regular interaction with the wider team to ensure robust specification and subsequent on-time delivery.

The correct candidate will have a strong working knowledge of electric motors, mechanical assembly apprehension, testing design, and methodology, and hold a broad understanding of theoretical as well as practical engineering applications. This role includes working with the cross-functional team and presenting to senior management to help bring value and guide the development of the cleaner head motor. Some of your tasks could include:

  • Develop an understanding of brushless DC (BLDC) motor Accelerated Life Test Methodology (ALT) study for a real ongoing project with an aim to reduce the testing duration and cost while meeting reliability requirement target with high confidence
  • Apply ALT methodology outcome onto existing BLDC motor life test to verify objective and target setting
  • Generate Project Charter by defining the project aim, scope, time frame, and support/resources required
  • Create a project time plan with detailed breakdown activities and manage each task's progress in a timely manner
  • Carry out research on ball bearing design construction, gather information on bearing life calculation equation, identify factors/limits of ball bearing reliability, and construct a failure tree diagram that lists all potential ball bearing failure modes
  • Carry out motor dyno test, tear down activities, and arrange temperature rise testing to determine cooling flow required to maintain motor bearing and winding within safety target limit
  • Perform free body diagram calculation on motor bearing loads based on the in-assembly (cleaner head) usage condition
  • Communicate with the Test team, Motor supplier to deliver accelerated life test jig including execution plan for accelerated life testing at the supplier site
  • Reports to Senior Motor Engineer on project deliverable status and technical risk discussion on a daily basis
  • Present the study’s conclusion to stakeholders in Project Wrap-Up Presentation and highlight lessons learned/recommendations for future improvements

  • Ability to communicate appropriate, concise, and accurate information, both in writing and verbally
  • Confident leading meetings and ability to evaluate technical problems to ensure clear direction
  • Be able to multi-task and plan effectively when working with a variety of project teams
  • Possess hands-on practical workshop skill
  • Basic knowledge of Magnetism, Thermodynamic heat transfer, and basic fluid flow
  • Basic knowledge in basic statistical methods – Basic statistics, Process capability, and Regression is a bonus
  • Basic to intermediate skill level in MS Office (Including Excel, Project, and Visio) package usage
  • Basic skill level in Minitab statistical tools
  • Basic skill level in CAD tools such as SIEMENS NX, Unigraphics
